Evi Cats (1994) lives and works in Brussels. Walls That Scream, her documentary about traces of police violence in Brussels - Cureghem, premiered at IDFA 2022 and was awarded with the VAF Wildcard soon after. Her latest and most fictional film, Waiting For a Sun Storm, deals with the (feminist) city and its layers of textures and time. It won the award for Best Belgian Student Short at Film Fest Gent. Since 2022, Cats regularly films for choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and her dance company Rosas.
Before making films, Cats completed her masters degree in Cultural Analysis in Amsterdam. Both in her film practice and her theoretical work she is interested in the city, everyday human interactions and small fictions within reality. Looking at Brussels and its social structures, Cats subtly examines the mixture of people and habits in this kaleidoscopic, ever- changing city. She works around questions of the body relating to political spaces; hoping film could be an act of poetic activism.
